The Source of True Knowledge?
Proverbs 2:6 For the Lord gives wisdom;
From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.
Since the beginning of last year I have been taking some theology papers through Otago University. This semester I am studying Christian Ethics. Recently I have been reading about the classic philosophers, Socrates, Plato and Aristotle (470-348BC). At the centre of their writings was the question, where does knowledge come from? In brief, their conclusion was; Reason is the only human faculty that can provide the clarity needed to produce knowledge. While there have been many philosophers since then, the writings of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle still underpin much of western society. Today many people, even Christians, hold that knowledge comes through the thinking powers of the human intellect.
In stark contrast Scripture tells us that true knowledge comes from God. Proverbs 2:6 For the Lord gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding. We are in uncertain times. None of us can predict what lies ahead during the next few weeks and months but one thing I know is that our source of knowledge to bring us clarity on what is happening around us and how we are to respond comes from God and God alone.
These next few weeks offer us a less cluttered life. My encouragement during this time is to grow in knowledge. Not by surfing the internet and media for information but by going to the source of all knowledge and seeking His council.
