Saint Augustine – “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.”This quote, penned by St. Augustine many years ago, is simple, short, and yet deeply profound. We often, and rightly so, remember and praise God as the creator of all things, as the one who formed us in the womb and breathed life into us. He crafted each one of us with careful, loving, attention, according to his divine and sovereign plan. But the very fact that we were carefully created by God in his image means that we are utterly lost and restless without his personal presence.

God’s creative stamp on humanity means that humanity has an innate need for a personal relationship with him, and as such, we can never be truly human nor truly at peace if we are distant from his presence. We cannot live life with God simply ‘added’ in as some sort of spice added to enhance an already lovely meal. Life itself only finds its fulfilment when lived fully and wholly with God – besides that, our hearts are restless and hungry.

Augustine’s quote is simply another way of saying what Jesus said in John 4:13 – “Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” Or later in John 6 – “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.”

My encouragement to you this week is, do not look to the world to find rest for your heart. Your heart was made to find its rest in the Lord, and He awaits you with open arms.

Since we have transitioned to “Delta” Level 2, we can now have in-person church services, but with limited numbers.

Here are the general requirements:

  • The service is limited to 50 people (not including those providing services)
  • Contact tracing is mandatory—you will be required to “sign in” using the NZ COVID-Tracer app or by writing your details in the COV contact tracing register
  • Regarding seating, we will need to provide 2-metre physical distancing between “bubbles”
  • Those attending can wear a mask, but they’re not mandatory
  • Hand sanitiser will be provided in various locations within the church building
  • There will be no tea or coffee offered at church services until we reach Level 1

This week we will be live streaming the service. Michael Mason has kindly offered set things up for us.  So, while the in-person gathering is limited to 50 people, everyone else will be able to join us online.

In order to stay within our limit of 50, this week we have decided to give preference to the older members of our community. We will be contacting you all by phone tomorrow to “book” a place for you. If you would really like to join the service this Sunday, please contact Leigh Chard at, or call the COV office (06 357 7336) to see it this can be arranged.

Of course, if you’re sick, please stay home. If you have symptoms of cold or flu, call your doctor or Healthline and get advice about being tested.

Please note that Margaret Soong (200 Tutaki Rd), the Dignams (307 Milson Line), and the Mitchells (190 Maxwells Line) have opened their homes for anyone who might want to gather with them for church this Sunday.

Please click the button below a few minutes before 10:00am to join our service online:

Here’s how we will organise communion this week:

  • The communion stewards will layout the bread (already diced) and the cups on the communion table at the front.
  • The stewards will call up each section of the church, one after the other, to come and collect their own bread and juice and return to their seats. The communion stewards will use tongs to serve the bread.
  • Those partaking can leave their cups under their seats or in the holder under the seat in from of them.
